So. Much. Driving.
And it’s even worse because I messed up the Google Maps route and added an extra hour of driving to the day.
What a day, though! Allison – who is now my officially designated “hype woman” – visited six Houston-area bookstores: The Book Readers Venue, Good Books in the Woods, Buy the Book, Village Books, The Book Attic, and Copperfield’s Books.
You can see the route here to the left, with a four-hour drive time, but that’s before my error. After breakfast at a deli on Hillcroft Street, we went to The Book Readers Venue, then to Good Books in the Woods, but when we went back to The Book Readers Venue! Neither of us knows that area, and we didn’t realize what was going on until we got back to the distinctive yellow buildings. Soooo, we turned around again and headed back to The Woodlands.
After Copperfield’s, we got dinner at Pho Ben (excellent) and then headed to our respective homes. The whole day was ten hours!
And what did I bring home besides some great new contacts?
Vinas Solamnus is a Dragonlance novel in the Lost Legends series. I’m slowly working my way to completion of the whole Dragonlance line. I’m also working on buying back some of my childhood. I loved Isaac Asimov’s Robot City when I was a kid, and finding them in the wild is always a treat. This and Vinas Solamnus both came from Good Books in the Woods. And speaking of them, check this out.
Incredible, right? We’re not going to be doing much rare book business, so seeing these in person at Good Books in the Woods was just wonderful.
What else? A Sorceress Comes to Call came from Village Books, Fire Sea from Buy the Book, and the Deaver and Block books came from Copperfield’s. See, I’m not just into sci-fi and fantasy (just mostly, as Miracle Max might say). Allison bought a few books from The Book Readers Venue, Buy the Book, and The Book Attic. We love supporting our local indies.
Next week, we’ll be visiting shops on the “west” route, which doesn’t require nearly as much driving.
